Planning a promotional campaign for a film
When the distributors agree to market a new film, they will watch it several
months before it is released into the cinema and plan a marketing campaign.
This includes deciding what should go into the posters, trailers, websites and
other material that will market the film.
An example of how a promotional campaign timeline could be planned out.
· Approximately 14 months before the movie the teaser poster would be released
· A month later web promotion begins. Official websites are launched which gives the potential audience insight into the movie and the characters.
· A month after that an official film poster would be released. This could consist of an image slogan and film title. Just slightly extra than the teaser poster released two months previous.
· Another month after that the film could be mentioned in magazines that would be relevant to the target audience.
· The next month another poster could be released possibly with a different image stating ‘coming soon’ to start to get the audience anticipating the annunciation of the actual release date.
· Two months after this a teaser trailer will be release giving the potential audience a ‘taste’ of what the film is going to be like. The majority of teaser trailers are a few seconds of lots of different shots of the film featuring a voice over, however this trailer would consist of very little information but just enough to get people excited and anticipating to see the full official trailer
· Three months later the third and final full theatrical poster would be released which would include information such as the title, slogan and actual release date of the film.
· Two months after this the full theatrical trailer would be released and shown in cinemas etc.
· One month after this the premier date would be set tv ads would start to be shown and possible a full magazine editorial on the film would be published.
· Finally two months after that the film would be released for the public to see in the cinema.
Therefore overall on average or ideally a promotional campaign for a film last around 14 months.
