Initial Research Into Magazine Covers - Michael

c

Here are two versions of the world exclusive “Batman and Catwoman” covers for the magazine Empire. The layout of the two covers is very similar with the figures being the main focus, either The Batman or Catwoman. They’re very iconic characters, both staring into the camera, looking serious.  They are staring at the camera so eyes our drawn to their faces immediately and is a good way of engaging instantly with the viewers.  The Batman films have dedicated fans, and magazines often release alternative covers for big films like this with a sizeable fan base as serious collectors may well purchase both versions of the magazine.
Both characters are wearing black clothing showing they are dark and mysterious. Catwoman is lit from the left hand side although her back is towards the light which shows off her figure and tells us she is small and slender, whereas Batman is standing forward facing the camera and is front lit to make him look bigger along with his completely black cape which emphasizes his shoulders to make him look stronger and tougher. This overall darkness represents the overall theme of the movie.
The masthead is paced in the same spot where it normally is on most of their magazines, the characters overlap the title to show that what they are offering is more important than the magazine itself.  In this case due to the absence of any normal magazine signs such as left hand bias you can tell that this issue is selling the film more than the magazine. The only other item apart from the mast head that suggests that this is a magazine is the barcode in the corner. The whole cover therefore has the feel of a special edition.

Empire Public Enemy
This cover is different to the last one as it follows a more conventional style for Empire magazine. The main character of the advertised film takes up most of the cover space and allows the readers to understand what kind of film this is. The main character is a recognisable actor “Johnny Depp” with his name under his image for those that don’t know. The main character is holding a tommy gun which suggests the genre of the film as well as him not looking into the camera which means that he is in the middle of something, suggesting he is on the run and looking out for danger, which goes with the idea of the title. This image is more likely taken from the film or trailer than the photo shoot images. The masthead is once again slightly covered by the main image as the magazine company rely on it still being recognisable. The font and colour of the masthead is bright red, which attracts most of the viewers to it as it stands out form the rest of the magazine. The clear and big teaser text make this magazine look more professional even though the cover is very crowded because of it.
A lot more information is on this magazine cover, including first looks at films like Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Clash of the Titans and hints at a new Ghostbuster film which would interest a lot of people because of the popularity of the first film. The magazine also includes a mini heading above the mast head in a different colour to show it’s not that same topic advertising the latest Harry Potter film another large franchise, stating “On set Exclusive”.
This magazine also has its website just underneath the “E” in the masthead which is less noticeable than a lot of the other text but still is a different colour to the background, which is a blurry grey. As well as this, the magazine also includes the price, barcode and date in the bottom corner. They put this important information here in every issue and brand of magazines so that people get used to it being there and so they know where to look for this without having to take loads of time to search the magazine for the price and decide not to buy it.
